For Alee Garibay, what stands out the most is the consumerist attitude of millennials – not just in the way they consume goods and services, but in the way they consume time and space. Just as how Zone Out depicts a boy who zones out as his music shuts out the world around him, Alee finds that millennials zone out from our realities to live in multiple virtual lives through our online avatars. The resultant fragmentation of the self creates a void of incompleteness that millennials try to supplement with more personas, data and experiences which in turn further fragments our identities – creating a vicious cycle. Yet, there is always a silver lining, and in today’s world, that silver lining can be found in our technological and economic developments which offer so many more choices and opportunities for millennials to create value in their lives. Through this piece, Alee aptly sums up the millennial struggle as one where people sift through a million truths to find their own, individual voice buried within.
